The Thar 5-door will officially be called the Mahindra Thar Roxx when it goes on sale this Independence day. The 5-door SUV is among 2024’s most highly anticipated new launches and has been under development for over two years now. Despite its niche, the regular Thar 3-door has been a huge success story for Mahindra, and its 5-door version will only diversify that appeal with more practicality while still retaining its off-roading DNA. Here, we answer some of the most popular queries you may have about the upcoming Thar 5-door.

When is Mahindra launching the Thar Roxx?

Keeping its tradition of revealing or launching vehicles on Independence Day, Mahindra will reveal prices for the Thar Roxx on August 15. Official bookings are expected to commence on the same day, although some dealers have been accepting pre-bookings.

Will Mahindra Thar Roxx get the 1.5-litre diesel engine?

Yes, the Thar Roxx will carry over all existing engine options from the Thar 3-door. That means you’ll get the 1.5-litre diesel engine in RWD guise with a manual gearbox; there’ll also be the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel engines with their respective manual and automatic gearboxes in 4x4 form. The 2.0-litre petrol engine could also be offered in RWD configuration, just like in the regular Thar. These engines, however, could be in a higher state of tune to account for the additional weight.

How will the Thar Roxx differ from the regular Thar?

The Thar 5-door will have a longer wheelbase, which means that the ladder-frame chassis will be more closely related to that of the Scorpio N’s. It will also likely carry over the Scorpio N’s more sophisticated suspension setup, including the frequency-dependent dampers, allowing for better on-road manners.

In terms of styling, the Roxx's grille gets a new double-stacked six-slot design, instead of the seven-slot one seen on the 3-door Thar. The circular headlamps continue, but with LED projector lamps and new C-shaped DRLs.

Will the Thar Roxx be better equipped than the regular Thar?

Yes, it will pack a bunch of additional features, including a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, LED projector headlamps, a 360-degree camera, push-button start, front and rear centre armrests, leatherette seat upholstery, rear AC vents, six airbags instead of two, and even a sunroof. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and ADAS features are also likely to be part of the mix. The Thar 5-door will also get rear disc brakes compared to just the front disc brakes in the regular Thar.

Will the Thar Roxx be a 7-seater SUV?

Despite the added wheelbase, the Thar 5-door will only be a two-row SUV with a five-seat configuration. The second row will feature a bench seat with a centre armrest as opposed to the two individual seats in the regular Thar. The added length would allow for plenty of boot space, which remains a limitation on the regular Thar.
