The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is the cafe racer sibling to the Interceptor 650 roadster and to our eyes, is the prettier machine of the two. Essentially both bikes are exactly the same with the exception of the fuel tank, handlebars, foot pegs and seat. The limited practicality of the Conti’s form factor is a double-edged sword and is probably what will draw in customers as well as push them away.

The Continental GT 650 looks like a typical dyed-in-the-wool British cafe racer with a round headlight, low clip-on ‘bars and twin exhaust mufflers. The bike can now also be had with alloy wheels thus bringing the peace of mind of tubeless tyres. The Conti can be had in six colours, two of which bring blacked-out finishes on the engine and exhaust mufflers.
With its recent update, the Continental GT 650 now comes with a USB charger and an LED headlight. Beyond those two things though, the features list is quite bleak. The bike uses twin digi-analogue dials but no gear-position indicator, DTE (distance to empty) indicator or real-time fuel efficiency data is available here.
The Continental GT’s engine is carried over lock, stock and barrel from the Interceptor with no changes whatsoever. This means that the 648cc mill is smooth, punchy, refined and makes a great sound in the process. In our tests, the 2023 model managed the 0-100kph sprint in 6.45s
Aiding the Continental GT’s agility, rear shocks are set three clicks higher on preload than the Interceptor’s, which reduces some of the squishy feel that we found the Interceptor was prone to when pushing hard through bends. Naturally, the improvement in suspension composure does result in a firmer feel, but this can easily be backed off to the lowest preload setting if desired.
The Continental GT 650 is priced between Rs 3.19 lakh – Rs 3.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai) and for that money what you get is a capable, fast and good-looking motorcycle, albeit one that isn’t very practical on a day-to-day basis. For those who want a twin-cylinder cafe racer on a budget, the Continental is a very good option, even if it is the only one.
An absolutely flimsy pretext is all I have ever needed to ping the good souls at Royal Enfield and ask to borrow a Continental GT 650. Therefore...
