The 718 Cayman coupe and the 718 Boxster convertible are Porsche’s mid-engined sportscars. The duo made the controversial shift from naturally-aspirated flat-six engines to turbocharged four-cylinder turbo units a few years ago, picking up the ‘718’ prefix in the transition, but soon, due to customer demand, the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat six from the 911 GT3 was reinstated, in the 718 GTS and GT4 RS models.

The Porsche 718s aren’t dramatic in design but have classic mid-engined proportions and somehow just look right. It’s a similar story on the inside. While the 718’s cabin might not appear cutting-edge at first, you’ll like how well thought out it is. All the main controls are in comfortable reach, the buttons are tactile and even the view out is good. There’s a pervasive feeling of quality but you will have to spend big if you want to jazz up your 718 Boxster’s or Cayman’s cabin.
The Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster are powered by 300hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engines. There’s some turbo lag, followed by a strong and sustained hit of power. What remains intact is the razor-sharp handling. The 718s drive like precision tools and feel like they pivot around the driver. A reasonably good ride and ground clearance also give the Porsche 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster genuine everyday usability.
For the full experience, skip past the base models and check out the GTS, which gives you the 911 GT3's 4.0 flat six engine. Revving to 9000rpm, it adds aural drama to the fine handling mix of the 718. There is also the more hardcore (and expensive) GT4 RS, but only serious track enthusiasts need apply. The 718 range will soon be replaced by all-electric models, so grab one while you still can.
